Illinois has entered an agreement with the College Board to offer the SAT free to all juniors (an agreement that was priorly held by ACT). In accordance with this agreement, A-JCHS has switched over to the College Board suite of assessments. Students at A-J will take the following tests, which are free unless otherwise noted:
PSAT 8/9: Given in the spring of a student’s freshman year
Accuplacer: The entrance exam for Shawnee Community College and required for all dual credit classes at A-J. Given in the spring of a student’s sophomore year.
PSAT 10: Given in the spring of a student’s sophomore year
PSAT/NMSQT (Optional): Students sign up to take this test in the fall of their junior year. Their scores on this test are used for National Merit Scholar Award eligibility. $17 fee unless eligible for waiver.
SAT: Given in the spring of a student’s junior year.
How do all these tests help my student?
One thing that we are extremely excited about is that all of these tests (with the exception of the Accuplacer) are aligned with the SAT. When a freshman gets his or her PSAT 8/9 or 10 score back, he or she will know exactly what he or she would have scored on the SAT that day. These test results can then be synced with a student’s College Board account (free), and through the College Board’s partnership with Khan Academy, a student can get a free, personalized study program to address his or her weaknesses in preparation for the SAT junior year.
See www.collegeboard.org for more information about free SAT test prep through Khan Academy, and to register for the SAT.
